Varicose Veins India

Are women more likely to get Varicose Veins?

Why are women more prone to developing varicose veins? Varicose Veins are bulging, dark purple or blue, twisted veins. With increasing age, both women and men over age 50 develop more varicose veins, but women are three times more likely than men to be affected.

Why mostly women?

Did you know that up to 50 percent of women may be affected at some point in their lives? Approximately 22 million women between 40 and 80 years old have varicose veins (Data from USA). These painful bulging veins are a very common problem and not purely a cosmetic issue.

Various studies and Research have shown that Hormones have a key role to play as to why women get varicose veins. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone impact menstrual cycles, physical development, and pregnancy. As women get older, hormonal changes occur which later cause mood swings, hot flashes, weakened bones, and more.

Pregnancy also has a key role in development of varicose veins. There is weight gain during pregnancy and also the enlarged Uterus presses down on the veins in the lower abdomen, preventing blood veins in the legs from going back to the heart. This causes an increased pressure in the veins of the legs. If the person has weak vein valves, then due to this increased pressure, these valves start leaking, and the blood in the veins starts accumulating in the leg veins, causing them to be enlarged. This is seen in many ladies during pregnancy. Once the child is delivered, then in many cases, due to the decrease in the pressure in the veins, the valves start functioning normally, and the dilated veins disappear. However, in many ladies, the varicose veins become a permanent problem due to the irreversible damage to the vein valves.

It is important to note that every pregnancy will cause a further effect on the vein valves. Therefore, ladies with multiple pregnancies have more likelihood of developing varicose veins.

Females, especially in India also tend to present later with more enlarged varicose veins and an advanced disease. Sadly, this is due to socio economic factors, because most women in India are at home and the men who work are given more priority for health issues since they are the bread winners of the family.

Surgical Options of Treatment:

There are two surgical options for Varicose Veins – Vein ligation and stripping. Ligation is the surgical procedure of tying off the veins. Stripping is the actual removal of the entire length of the vein and is sometimes performed in conjunction with ligation. Surgical procedures require cuts and stitches, anesthesia and prolonged stay in hospital. They are also associated with complications of anesthesia, infection and significant pain. Since the last two decades, surgical procedures are no longer advised as first line of treatment for Varicose veins.

Minimally Invasive Treatments:

Vascular specialists can treat varicose veins without surgery. There are several minimally invasive treatment options, which involve removing the veins or blocking them off, so they disappear. These treatments do not require any cuts or stitches and typically have a quicker recovery time than surgery.

Endovenous Laser ablation – It’s almost painless and very effective. Through a small Nick in the skin, a thin tube called a catheter and laser fiber is used to apply heat to close the Varicose within from within. It is performed under local anesthesia and the procedure takes less than 20 minutes. The veins will close off and disappear. Details of Laser treatment is available at www.varicose.in

Sclerotherapy – This is a good treatment for spider veins, which are cosmetic, and can also work well for smaller Varicose Veins. A special sclerosant chemical is injected through a small needle into the vein, causing it to close off. Eventually, the veins will fade away. Sclerotherapy is not effective for treating larger Varicose Veins. Videos of Sclerotherapy procedure are available on our website www.varicose.in
