Varicose Veins affect more than 10 million Indians every year. And that is indeed a very high number. But do patients really have to go through conventional surgical treatment? Not anymore. With Advanced Laser Technology, treatment is completed within an hour, and most patients are discharged within a day. Laser therapies use focused lights which generate very localized heat energy, which is used to close the leaking Varicose veins, without damaging any other surrounding structures. This heat energy causes damage to the inner lining of the leaking vein, and a scar forms, leading to the permanent closure of the vein. The leakage stops immediately. Over the next few months, the body removes the dead vein, and it can no longer be seen even by sonography examination.
Surface laser treatment
Surface laser vein treatment is done on the outside of your skin. It can be used to treat spider veins and tiny Varicose Veins which are just under the skin’s surface. However usually, more than one laser session is needed. Surface laser treatment can be combined with micro sclerotherapy methods to treat spider veins, mainly for cosmetic purposes.
Endovenous Laser Treatment
This method is mainly used to treat larger Varicose Veins in the legs. Under sonography guidance, a needle is placed into the vein (just like when collecting blood for blood tests). Through this needle, a small wire is passed followed by a small plastic tube into the vein. Through this plastic tube (called a sheath) a thin laser fiber is passed into the vein. While doing this, the doctor watches the vein on an ultrasound screen. The tip of the laser fiber is accurately placed in the proper position, and the local anesthetic solution is given around this area with a thin needle. The laser energy is then delivered into the vein, causing a complete closure of the leaking vein. Once completed, both the laser fiber and sheath are removed from the vein, leaving a small puncture mark (similar to after blood collection). A compression stocking is placed on the treated leg, the patient gets up from the table and starts walking immediately. Laser is less painful than vein ligation and stripping, and it has a shorter recovery time. Only local anesthesia or a light sedative is needed for laser treatment. Most patients can resume their normal duties from the same day or the next day.

What are the benefits of Laser Treatment?
Did you know, lasers are more precise than conventional surgical instruments, and no cuts or stitches are required during laser treatment.
Laser procedures are usually shorter than traditional surgeries and can usually be performed within an hour. They can often be done on an outpatient basis. And the good news is you are discharged immediately.
Laser operations help people to heal faster. You may experience less pain, swelling, scarring than with traditional surgeries.
Why choose Laser Therapy over conventional surgery?
Advance Laser Surgery | Conventional Surgery |
● Fastest recovery with no cuts, stitches or, scars ● Painless procedure ● No blood loss ● Less recurrence rate ● Zero infection ● Same-day discharge ● Free doctor visits post-surgery | ● Open surgery with multiple cuts and wounds ● Painful procedure ● Heavy blood loss ● High chances of recurrence ● High possibility of infection ● Min. 3 days of hospital stay ● Repeated doctor visits required |
What happens after Laser Therapy?
Usually, there is no rest required after Laser treatment for Varicose Veins. In fact, patients are encouraged to walk as much as possible after treatment. Except for weight lifting, there are no restrictions on activity for treated patients.
However, most patients have been prescribed a course of antibiotics and mild pain medications for a week, to prevent any infections, and also to make patients comfortable.
It is essential to wear compression stockings on the treated leg daily from morning to evening for at least a month after treatment. This helps to compress the treated veins and also hastens to heal. Most patients do not need to wear stockings after one month.

Varicose veins are common, but are they a matter of concern? Dangerous complications can occur, although they are rare. Varicose veins affect about 1 in 5 of all adults. In some, these dark veins bulge out thus, making them easy to spot. Varicose Veins are most likely to appear on the lower legs, but you can find them elsewhere also.
Patients suffering from varicose veins do not always visit their doctors and some of them are hesitant to have procedures done to fix them. Of course, without treatment, there are health risks involved. Untreated venous diseases can lead to long-term complications, an increase in severity of the disease, and impairment of abilities like running and walking normally.

What happens when you ignore your varicose veins.
Poor blood circulation in the legs
Believe it or not, but Varicose veins are a disease. The most common areas affected are the legs and feet, although this disease can occasionally affect other areas of the body. It’s not just a cosmetic blemish on your skin that makes your veins stick out. The veins find difficulty in circulating blood through your body back to your heart, which is why your legs and feet bother you at times. If you notice that you feel exceptionally tired when performing daily activities or that your legs or feet throb after physical exertion, it could be a circulation problem. Vein treatments can fix the veins or remove severely damaged veins, improving circulation.
Pain and discomfort
Your legs or feet may feel warm, start to burn, swell, or feel heavy. You may even have restless legs that won’t stay still when you try to relax. Varicose veins can be the source. You can therefore understand that leaving this condition untreated can lead to a decline in your overall health. If you need to see a vein specialist, we encourage you to see a doctor soon.
Swelling in the legs
As the pressure within your veins builds up, fluid from the veins can actually leak into the surrounding tissues causing swelling. This is usually most prominent around the ankle. The skin gets tighter, is more impressionable to the touch, and the legs can become quite painful. When swelling becomes severe, your skin can begin to leak and ooze fluid from the legs. Skin can also become hard and discolored, indicating a real problem under the skin.
Skin Ulcers
In relation to swelling, skin can also crack, forming ulcers on the surface. Open wounds can leave you susceptible to infection. The skin becomes weak and heals more slowly from minor cuts and bruises, too. Ulcers are treatable and can most cases can heal completely with the right care by a doctor who specializes in vein procedures like this.
Skin Infection
It goes without saying, open sores and ulcers on the skin are prone to infection. Any open wound, cut, or scrape on the skin is susceptible in the same way. The generally large size of ulcers and other skin conditions related to the veins makes them more dangerous than most other issues. Bacteria located on our skin can get into the body through these open areas of the skin and cause major damage to our internal systems.

Why are women more prone to developing varicose veins? Varicose Veins are bulging, dark purple or blue, twisted veins. With increasing age, both women and men over age 50 develop more varicose veins, but women are three times more likely than men to be affected.
Why mostly women?
Did you know that up to 50 percent of women may be affected at some point in their lives? Approximately 22 million women between 40 and 80 years old have varicose veins (Data from USA). These painful bulging veins are a very common problem and not purely a cosmetic issue.
Various studies and Research have shown that Hormones have a key role to play as to why women get varicose veins. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone impact menstrual cycles, physical development, and pregnancy. As women get older, hormonal changes occur which later cause mood swings, hot flashes, weakened bones, and more.
Pregnancy also has a key role in development of varicose veins. There is weight gain during pregnancy and also the enlarged Uterus presses down on the veins in the lower abdomen, preventing blood veins in the legs from going back to the heart. This causes an increased pressure in the veins of the legs. If the person has weak vein valves, then due to this increased pressure, these valves start leaking, and the blood in the veins starts accumulating in the leg veins, causing them to be enlarged. This is seen in many ladies during pregnancy. Once the child is delivered, then in many cases, due to the decrease in the pressure in the veins, the valves start functioning normally, and the dilated veins disappear. However, in many ladies, the varicose veins become a permanent problem due to the irreversible damage to the vein valves.
It is important to note that every pregnancy will cause a further effect on the vein valves. Therefore, ladies with multiple pregnancies have more likelihood of developing varicose veins.
Females, especially in India also tend to present later with more enlarged varicose veins and an advanced disease. Sadly, this is due to socio economic factors, because most women in India are at home and the men who work are given more priority for health issues since they are the bread winners of the family.

Varicose Veins are not just a Cosmetic issue- it’s much more!!
How your legs look may be a matter of concern for you, but varicose veins may be more than just a cosmetic issue. Some symptoms of varicose veins you should watch out for:
- Tired or heavy legs
- Burning or throbbing in your legs
- Swollen ankles or legs
- Discomfort or pain in the legs
- Thickening of the skin or changes in the skin color
- Bleeding that is unstoppable
- Hard, warm, and painful veins
If you have these symptoms, do consult a Vein Specialist. Doctor House Cardiovascular Center is one of the leading specialist vein centers in the country. Our specialists have treated Vascular diseases since last 30 years and performed the first laser treatment for varicose veins in the country in January 2003. Do visit our multi-lingual website (www.varicose.in) Our specialists will examine you and may suggest various methods of treatment if necessary.
Surgical Options of Treatment:
There are two surgical options for Varicose Veins – Vein ligation and stripping. Ligation is the surgical procedure of tying off the veins. Stripping is the actual removal of the entire length of the vein and is sometimes performed in conjunction with ligation. Surgical procedures require cuts and stitches, anesthesia and prolonged stay in hospital. They are also associated with complications of anesthesia, infection and significant pain. Since the last two decades, surgical procedures are no longer advised as first line of treatment for Varicose veins.
Minimally Invasive Treatments:
Vascular specialists can treat varicose veins without surgery. There are several minimally invasive treatment options, which involve removing the veins or blocking them off, so they disappear. These treatments do not require any cuts or stitches and typically have a quicker recovery time than surgery.
Endovenous Laser ablation – It’s almost painless and very effective. Through a small Nick in the skin, a thin tube called a catheter and laser fiber is used to apply heat to close the Varicose within from within. It is performed under local anesthesia and the procedure takes less than 20 minutes. The veins will close off and disappear. Details of Laser treatment is available at www.varicose.in
Sclerotherapy – This is a good treatment for spider veins, which are cosmetic, and can also work well for smaller Varicose Veins. A special sclerosant chemical is injected through a small needle into the vein, causing it to close off. Eventually, the veins will fade away. Sclerotherapy is not effective for treating larger Varicose Veins. Videos of Sclerotherapy procedure are available on our website www.varicose.in
There are many other methods of treatment for Varicose Veins. Doctor House Cardiovascular Center is one of the leading specialist vein centers in the country. Our specialists have treated Vascular diseases since last 30 years and performed the first laser treatment for varicose veins in the country in January 2003.
Do visit our website www.varicose.in for complete details of the treatment options. Our website is available in English, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati. Doctor House Cardiovascular Center has all diagnostic facilities for Vein Diseases under one roof.
Can you Prevent Varicose Veins?
There is no way to completely prevent Varicose Veins. But one can improve the circulation and muscle tone which may reduce your risk of developing Varicose Veins or getting additional ones. Some of the measures include
- Regular Exercising
- Monitoring your weight
- Eating a high-fiber, low-salt diet
- Avoiding high heels and tight hosiery
- Elevating your legs
- Changing your sitting or standing position regularly
If despite all the above, you feel that your symptoms are still present, or new veins are developing, then set up an appointment with a vascular specialist who specializes in the treatment of varicose veins to determine the appropriate approach for treating your varicose veins.

Your risk of Varicose Veins increases if a close family member has the condition. For example, your grandmother had Varicose Veins, your mom has, maybe your cousins and uncle to have them.
Did you know that Varicose Veins are a common medical problem that affects about 30% of adults? You see these twisted blue veins, they can be seen and felt under the skin, especially in the legs. Your curiosity doubles when you have a history of Varicose Veins in your family.
First, let us understand why Varicose Veins occur. The valves inside the veins open and close to propel blood to flow back towards the heart. But when these valves fail or become incompetent, they do not open and close as they should. This dysfunction allows blood intended to flow towards the heart to flow backward and pool, particularly in the lower extremities. As a result, this backflow and pooling of blood can result in the formation of Varicose Veins. They stretch the vein walls, resulting in the veins getting bigger and appearing twisted and blue, just under the skin says Dr. Shoaib F. Padaria, eminent Vein Specialist at Doctor House Cardiovascular Center in Mumbai. www.varicose.in
Weakness of the one-way Vein valves can be inherited. Depending on the degree of weakness, they may start leaking in young age if they are very weak. On the other hand, in most patients they get damaged after the age of 40 or 50 years. Your genetic factor or what you have inherited is just one aspect of your risk for getting Varicose Veins. There are many other factors which may contribute to the weak valves getting damaged, says Dr Shoaib Padaria.
Female Hormones:
Taking medications that contain female hormones, such as birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy, increases the risk of varicose veins. These hormones relax the veins, limiting their ability to move the blood along.
Pregnancy:
Your baby may put added pressure on the veins, but the good news is Varicose Veins that develop during pregnancy often go away about 3 months after the baby is born.
Having excess weight:
Are you overweight or obese? It increases your risk of Varicose Veins. This can strain the veins and limit the flow of blood back to the heart.
Age:
It’s no surprise that we grow older, our veins along with their valves and walls get older as well. Hard to believe, but true – The longer you live, the more likely your veins are to deteriorate, and Varicose Veins can form.
Work Schedule:
Mostly work that involves standing or sitting for long periods of time are more likely to develop Varicose Veins.
Injury:
If you suffer an injury to your leg, your veins could be permanently damaged, which may result in Varicose Veins.
Blood clots:
They can happen or more likely to lead to the development of Varicose Veins. Blood clots decrease blood flow through the vein and this pressure can stress vein walls and valves.

Preventive steps and effective treatment
Even if Varicose Veins is hereditary, remember there are things you can do to lessen your risk of developing them yourself. Some of these simple lifestyle changes may help decrease or diminish their severity.
Use your legs – Walking and avoiding sitting or standing for too long can improve blood flow in your legs.
Lose weight – Losing the excess weight will likely decrease the pressure on your veins and may improve how your legs look and feel.
Put your feet up – Elevating your legs 4 times a day for 30 minutes each time, can give your veins a break and allow gravity to help the blood move along.
Wear compressing stockings – Get yourself these special elastic stockings from the drug store, or your doctor may prescribe you a pair with a specific strength of compression. Put them on in the morning when you first get out of the bed and take them off before you go to bed at night.
Even if you have made preventive efforts, you may still develop Varicose Veins over time. The good news is that you have more options today than your grandmother did for the treatment of Varicose Veins.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a medical term used to describe a condition in which the blood from the legs does not go back adequately to the heart through the heart veins. As we all know, the leg veins take the blood back from the legs to the heart, and this is done by the pumping function of the muscles of the calves, which act as the “heart pump of the legs”.
Now, Chronic Venous Insufficiency can occur due to two reasons:
- When there is a narrowing or blockage in a vein of the leg, in which case the blood finds it difficult to go upwards to the heart. The most common cause of this is Deep Vein Thrombosis
- When there is a leakage in some valves of the vein, which allows the blood to flow backwards in the vein towards the ankle, and extra venous blood accumulates in the legs. Leakages of the valves in the veins gives rise to Varicose Veins.
Chronic Venous Insufficiency occurs when your leg vein doesn’t allow blood to flow back up to your heart. What makes sure that blood flows towards your heart – the valves in your veins. It becomes a matter of concern when these valves don’t work well, and blood flows backwards.
Causes of Chronic venous insufficiency:
- Blood clots in the legs (DVT)
- Varicose veins
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Smoking
- Cancer
- Muscle weakness, leg injury, or trauma
- Swelling of a superficial vein (phlebitis)
- Family history of venous insufficiency
- Not moving for long periods of time
For more details or information on Varicose Vein, visit our website www.varicose.in or get in touch with Dr. Shoaib F. Padaria at Doctor House Cardiovascular Center in Mumbai.
Symptoms of Chronic venous insufficiency include:
- Swelling of the legs or ankles (edema)
- When you stand, when you raise your legs, pain gets worse
- Leg cramps
- Heaviness in your legs, aching or throbbing
- Itchy legs
- Weak legs
- The skin on your legs or ankles thickens
- Changing of skin color, especially around the ankles
- Leg ulcers
- Varicose veins
- A feeling of tightness in your calves
How is Venous insufficiency diagnosed?
Your doctor will perform a detailed physical examination and elicit a complete medical history to figure out if you have chronic venous insufficiency. You may also have to go through some imaging tests such as a Sonography test of the veins of the leg (Venous Doppler) to pinpoint the source of the problem.
How is Venous insufficiency treated?
Venous Insufficiency treatment completely depends on your health status and history. Other factors your doctors will consider are:
Specific symptoms
Age
The severity of your condition
How well you can tolerate medications or procedures.
Prescription compression stockings are the most common treatment for venous insufficiency. They apply pressure at the ankle and lower leg. They help improve blood flow and can reduce leg swelling. Compression stockings come in a range of prescription strengths and different lengths. What is the best type of compression stocking is for your treatment, your doctor will help you decide.
There are many treatment methods for Varicose Veins or Deep Vein Thrombosis, which are the most common causes of Chronic Venous Insufficiency. Our doctors at our center will evaluate your condition, and decide what is most appropriate for you.

Vein health is important. But the number of people suffering from this number is huge. The numbers will likely blow you away. Do you know 30% of people struggle with this vein issue? Yes, you heard it right. Because that is the statistic, we are looking at today.
With such a huge number, vein health is a problem that should be more widely understood. Unfortunately, it is not. With a better understanding of vein health, people will better know what they should and should not be doing if their vein health is at risk. To assist you with more information, here’s what you need to know the do’s and don’ts for vein health.
For more details or information on Varicose Vein, visit our website www.varicose.in or get in touch with Dr. Shoaib F. Padaria at Doctor House Cardiovascular Center in Mumbai.
Maintain healthy veins with these do’s and don’ts.
There are many things you probably do not think of that can affect your vein health.
Things that may negatively impact your vein health. Let us start with what you should not be doing.
Don’t sit or stand for long periods of time.
Problems you will face from a sedentary lifestyle:
- Sitting burns fewer calories. Low-energy activities such as sitting or lying down do not require much energy, and as a result, keep your daily calorie burn to a minimum.
- Sitting means greater chances of weight gain. The more you sit, the less you are being mobile, which means you’re at a higher risk of becoming overweight, and possibly even obese.
- Sitting puts you at risk for diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. People who sit for long periods of time without lowering their caloric intake to accommodate are at high risk of becoming insulin resistant.
- Sitting leads to an early death. Most people who spend a great deal of time sitting are at a higher risk of dying early.
- Sitting cannot be reversed by one hour of exercise. Regardless of how intense your workout is, you still need to get up at least every 90 minutes to move around a bit. One hour on the treadmill does not fix your 12 hours of sitting.
Don’t eat a lot of sugar.
When it comes to your vein health, sugar wreaks havoc on your body in several ways. The more sugar you take in, the more your body produces a lipoprotein that can get stuck to the walls of your blood vessels. And this is a massive problem for your veins. With this build-up of plaque on your blood vessel walls, your blood can clot, which will lead to vein issues, along with several other problems (including high cholesterol). You want to avoid overdoing sugar, and make sure you’re drinking lots of water to keep your vessels clot-free.
Don’t think your vein problems will disappear.
The longer that you leave your vein problems untreated, the higher you are putting yourself at risk of developing some serious health issues. If you put off treating your veins too long, you could end up with deep vein thrombosis. And trust us — this is something you do not want to face.
Don’t smoke.
Even your veins are not immune to the dangers of smoking. Chemicals in cigarettes can cause your blood to thicken and lose oxygen, which makes your blood flow much more slowly. Pair that with the fact that the nicotine in cigarettes hardens your arteries, and you are looking at high chances of some serious blood clots happening. So, toss away the cigarette and your veins will thank you.
How about you skip worrying about that, and simply contact a vein specialist near you when you sense something with your veins is off. For more details or information on Varicose Vein, visit our website www.varicose.in or get in touch with Dr. Shoaib F. Padaria at Doctor House Cardiovascular Center in Mumbai.
DO’s: Things That May Help Improve Your Vein Health
We are not all about what you should not do — there are some things you should definitely be doing to help improve your vein health.
Do walk regularly.
Keep walking. It is one of the best ways to keep your veins healthy, and how you can combat that sedentary lifestyle. Walking is great because it is low-impact and gets your circulation going without putting too much strain on the rest of your body. By simply walking 30 minutes a day, you will do a lot of good to your veins.
Do maintain a healthy diet.
Focus on a healthy diet free of excess sugar and salt and see your vein health improve. Eating healthy for your veins is easy. Here are some tips on how to boost your health to help your veins:
- Increase fiber intake. Not only does fiber help your body digest food better, but it also keeps your body from absorbing unhealthy fats.
- Eat more vitamin C. Vitamin C boosts collagen and elastin creation in your body, which is key to keeping your veins contracting and dilating so they can do their job.
- Drink more water. Water is key to keeping your system flushed and keeping you all-around healthy. We bet you’re not drinking as much as you should be!
- Up your Rutin intake. “Rutin? What’s that?” Rutin is a flavonoid and antioxidant that help reduce inflammation caused by damaged veins. It also serves to help prevent blood clots. High amounts of Rutin occur naturally in foods like buckwheat, asparagus, unpeeled apples, figs, black tea, green tea, and elderflower tea. Eating an apple or figs, or drinking a glass of green tea, can automatically introduce more Rutin into your diet.
- Lower salt consumption. Too much salt in your diet can lead to fluid retention, which adds pressure to your veins and could cause them some serious harm.
Do elevate your legs.
Do not wait until the end of the day — elevate your legs throughout the day to help with circulation. You can do this by either resting them on your desk or a table, or by lying against a wall and putting your legs up the wall. Elevating your legs gives your veins a break from their work and takes the pressure off of your legs.
Do get vein problems treated.
If they are handled early-on, vein problems you are having should be a fairly easy and painless thing to treat. So, what are you waiting for? Do not wait until something terrible happens. Start changing your bad habits around to get your vein health on track, and your entire body will thank you.

Varicose Veins are often painful. And this is caused due to the poor circulation of blood in your legs. But, relax! You need not worry. There are several treatments that are now available that can treat varicose veins, without resorting to major surgery.
With new technological advances, there are now many forms of treatment procedures available. But, a note of caution! Every case of varicose veins is different, and different procedures may be suitable for different types of cases. Just because the procedure is “latest”, does not mean it is the “best”. Sometimes, these are all marketing procedures. So, leave the decision in the hands of your vein specialist.
Dr Shoaib Padaria has been doing Endovenous non-surgical procedures for Varicose Veins since 2003, and considered to be an authority on the subject, having written many chapters in Vascular Textbooks on this topic.
Endovenous Laser Ablation Treatment
This is the standard procedure for treating Varicose Veins and has the longest experience and results all over the world. Due to availability of different forms and sizes of Laser fibers, this technique can be used to treat large and small veins, and Perforator Veins. Under local anesthesia ( no spinal anesthesia or general anesthesia is used) , a thin laser fiber is introduced inside the troubling vein. Laser energy is delivered which generates heat and causes the vein to collapse and close. The laser fiber is then removed from the vein. The entire laser procedure takes about 30 minutes to perform, and the patients can walk immediately afterwards. We have experience of over 18000 cases of laser treatments performed by us, and worldwide experience has shown this procedure to have good immediate and long-term benefits. Details of this therapy and videos are available on our website www.varicose.in
A similar method of treatment is Radiofrequency Ablation ( RFA). This was more popular in the past. However, with newer 1470 radial laser fibers being used regularly, RFA procedures are not so commonly used. Furthermore, it is difficult to treat Perforator veins with RFA procedure, and additional Laser procedure has to be used in the same patient, increasing the costs. Details about RFA and videos are available on our website www.varicose.in
Sclerotherapy
This method of treatment involves a injecting a medical compound known as a Sclerosing Agent into the veins with a needle, under sonography guidance. This chemical acts on the inner blood vessel wall and causes the Varicose Veins to collapse and close. This procedure is effective in small sized veins, and in spider veins. When used for larger Varicose Veins, the chances of re- opening of these veins is very high. Sclerotherapy technique is often used as complementary and additional treatment with Laser therapy, to give a good cosmetic result. Further details on Sclerotherapy are available on our website www.varicose.in
Glue Treatment:
Medical glue, Cyano-acrylate, is one of the latest techniques used for treatment of Varicose Veins. Its advantage is that there is no need of local anesthesia, and the procedure is performed in shorter period. However, it should be noted that is useful for deeper veins. When used to close varicose veins close to the skin, the closed veins develop into a thick, hard, rope like structure, which can be quite painful for a long period of time. Therefore, Glue treatment has very specific uses, and is not for every patient.
Other Methods of Treatment for Varicose Veins:
There are several other methods of treatment. Detailed information is available on our website www.varicose.in
Choosing the right Varicose Vein treatment
If you are confused, about your Varicose Vein treatment, don’t worry. Your doctor will guide you and help you decide which method is the most beneficial for you. For more information about Varicose Vein treatment, you can get in touch with Dr. Shoaib F. Padaria at Doctor House Cardiovascular Center in Mumbai.
- Watch out for your symptoms: If pain plays a significant role in the decision to remove your Varicose Veins, your doctor will likely suggest a procedure most suitable for you.
- How severe are your Varicose Veins: No matter it’s small or large veins, they can be treated using a single or combination of different techniques?
- Age factor: Since all Endovenous procedures are performed under local anesthesia, age is really not a factor. We have treated many patients over 80 and 90 years.

Do you often complain of pain, swelling, throbbing, or a burning sensation in your legs? Beware! These symptoms could all be due to Varicose Veins. Varicose veins are enlarged veins with a rope-like appearance. They’re usually purple or blue in color, occur right beneath your skin and typically affect your legs and feet.
For some, varicose veins are only a cosmetic concern. In fact, the large, twisting veins may cause no discomfort whatsoever, while damaged veins that are less visible can become extremely painful.
In general, various symptoms contribute to the overall feeling of pain and discomfort:
- The feeling of heavy, achy legs
- Muscle cramps
- The feeling of throbbing and burning in your legs
- Swelling in your calves and around your ankles
- Discomfort around a particular area of veins
All these symptoms usually become more bothersome during warm days. Blood vessels have a tendency to dilate with higher temperatures, which makes it even harder for the valves to function properly. The symptoms also worsen as the day progresses and more blood pools around your ankles. Prolonged periods of sitting or standing are also considered aggravating factors and can result in pain.

How to get relief from varicose vein pain
There are several ways to relieve pain caused by varicose veins.
Elevate your legs
Simple exercises can help you get relief from Varicose Veins. All you need to do is elevate your legs above your heart. You can place your feet up on a table, stretch them up a wall, or lie down in bed and rest your legs on three or four pillows. This will help make it easier for blood flow in your lower body to circulate toward the heart, and the venous valves will function more effectively.
All it takes is just 15 minutes and you can follow this at a time. It should help reduce the swelling and ease the pain.
Stretch and change positions
It’s very important to stretch yourself and move. Walking causes the muscles in your calf to contract, and this empties the collected blood in your legs back towards the heart. This causes the leg pain to decrease. Flex your feet frequently, especially during long trips when your legroom is limited.
If you have to sit or stand in your job, change position at least every 30 minutes and bend your knees regularly. Proper hydration and physical movement support healthy blood circulation, so drink enough water and move around as frequently as possible.
Soak legs in cold water
Summers can get really tough for patients suffering from Varicose Veins. It’s very helpful to soak your legs in cold water. The reason is warm weather tends to dilate the veins, which puts more pressure on already strained varicose veins. This will help to decrease the swelling and the associated feeling of heaviness, as well as overall discomfort and leg cramps.
Avoid taking hot baths and spending time in hot tubs. The heat has a negative effect on your veins, and the throbbing pain can become even worse if you spend too much time in hot water.
Drink plenty of water
As we all know; proper hydration promotes blood circulation. So, if you are suffering from Varicose Veins, it’s important that you drink plenty of water which helps in keeping the blood flowing and reduces discomfort.
Maintain a healthy weight: Keeping a track of your weight is important. Gaining excess weight can result in development of or enlargement of Varicose Veins. Shed those extra pounds, stay fit and healthy. Also, follow a low-salt diet to prevent water retention that can cause swelling.
Wear low heeled shoe and less restrictive clothing: Avoid wearing high heels. Wearing tight clothing, particularly around the waist, legs, or groin area, can impede blood flow.

We know that struggling with varicose veins, vein disease, or other vein issues can be cumbersome. And you would want to get the problems sorted out as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more at risk you are putting yourself in developing further problems.
Before heading to the professional medical center, though, you must know which questions to ask your vein doctor.
How to approach the doctor, which questions to ask, will your queries be resolved, we know various such things might be running in your mind. Relax! While your cosmetic concerns and medical condition are unique to you, here are common questions that many patients ask and may be helpful as you explore your treatment options.
How do I know if I have Varicose Veins?
There are two types of vein issues – Varicose Veins and Spider Veins. Spider Veins are small (under 1mm) while Varicose Veins are larger (over 3mm). Not only do they look different in size, shape, and colour, but they also cause different symptoms. Spider veins tend to sting while varicose veins ache and swell. The vein doctor should be able to diagnose your case.
What are the symptoms?
Whether it’s the bulging Varicose Veins or the Web-like Spider Veins, it’s important to understand the reason for this happening. It could be due to genetics, pregnancy, weight, lack of physical activity, ageing, or even restrictive clothing. With the correct vein information, your doctor can suggest you various treatments.

What are the chances of having linked conditions?
Varicose Veins and Spider Veins may be linked to Saphenous Vein Reflux or Deep Vein Thrombosis. The latter is caused when a blood clot forms in a large vein, usually in the legs. Saphenous vein Reflux affects the blood circulation, with Varicose Veins being a symptom. Asking the doctor about these issues is crucial too.
Will I suffer from any pain or side effects?
Though this question varies depending on your vein problems and the treatment your doctor sees as the best fit for you, chances are very good that your pain and side effects suffering will be minimal.
With modern technology in the field of vein treatment, procedures have been made much more comfortable and easy to recover from. Long gone are the days of being in the hospital and bedridden for weeks post-vein-treatment. Thanks to advances in laser technology, most patients are able to get back to normal life with little to no downtime.
How experienced is my doctor?
When it comes to finding the right specialist to treat varicose veins, this is a crucial consideration. Although many doctors can perform procedures, not all are vascular specialists. What are the risks with/without treatment?
It’s not necessary that you have to undergo Varicose Vein treatment. However, a large number of cases will (if left untreated) cause mobility problems and reduce your quality of life. In most cases, surgery isn’t complicated while local anaesthesia is the only medicine required. Still, it’s best to understand the full scenario to make an informed decision.
What type of treatments is available for vein disease?
Depending on the assessment of your veins and the severity of your symptoms, treatments may range from self-care strategies, such as wearing compression stockings designed to increase circulation, to more advanced procedures.
For medium to large veins, your vein specialist may recommend a non-surgical laser therapy such as Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) or Radiofrequency Ablation endovenous Therapy (RFT). With EVLT and RFA, your doctor will use laser heat to actually close veins, effectively rerouting blood flow through healthy veins. The procedures are performed in-office and are minimally invasive, using local anaesthetic. Little or no downtime is required.
How long will the treatment take and what’s the recovery time?
Depending on your assessment, treatments can be remarkable effective quickly. Thanks to advances in laser technology, most treatments are complete in about an hour, and most patients can resume normal activity with little to no downtime.
What results should I expect?
Patients pursue varicose vein treatment usually for a combination of three reasons—how their legs look, how they feel, and how severely their lives are being impacted. We will discuss how the best treatment plan for your unique factors will improve how your legs may look and feel, and the long-term considerations for your optimal health.

For most people, a well-paying white-collar job definitely beats the kind of hard physical labour that can often lead to a variety of health problems as we get older – and we all love our modern conveniences.
However, a sedentary lifestyle can definitely lead to its share of health issues, including Deep Vein Thrombosis. Deep Vein Thrombosis is a syndrome, in which a blood clot forms in the lower body, causing leg pain, swelling, or potentially deadly complications if the clot travels upwards to the lungs or heart.
Symptoms of DVT in the leg are:
● Throbbing or cramping pain in 1 leg (rarely both legs), usually in the calf or thigh
● Swelling in 1 leg (rarely both legs)
● Warm skin around the painful area
● Red or darkened skin around the painful area
● Swollen veins that are hard or sore when you touch them
These symptoms also happen in your arm or tummy if that’s where the blood clot is.
Who is more likely to get DVT:
● 60 years and above
● Overweight
● Smoker
● If DVT was diagnosed before
● A contraceptive pill is taken before
● Cancer or heart disease
● Affected by Varicose Veins
There are also some temporary situations when you’re at more risk of DVT. These include:
● If you are staying in or recently left the hospital – especially if you are operated and
cannot move
● You go on a long journey, by car, or air or train
● You are pregnant or you have delivered in the previous 6 weeks
● You are dehydrated
Sometimes DVT can happen for no obvious reasons.
Below are the five tips for reducing your risk of suffering from Deep Vein Thrombosis:
● Stay Active: You already know how important it is to stay active – both for your physical health and your mental outlook. However, for those looking to avoid deep vein thrombosis, keeping active and fit is particularly necessary. You don’t necessarily need a hugely rigorous exercise regimen – simply a half-hour to an hour of walking, swimming, or biking every day can make an enormous difference.
● Lose Weight: It’s no secret that the battle of the bulge is rarely easy to fight, but the benefits of managing your weight through a healthy diet are well worth the effort. Get in touch with a skilled dietician or simply start paying attention to calories to make sure you’re not taking in more than you’re burning each day. At the very least, greasy fried foods, sugary sodas, empty-calorie candies, and other diet-destroying treats should be kept to an absolute minimum.
● Get Your Blood Pressure Checked: These days, you don’t need to visit the doctor’s office to have your blood pressure checked. Portable machines are easier to use than ever and many drug stores also provide access to in-store testing machines. Blood pressure can rise because of stress, smoking, and weight gain/obesity as well as excessive sodium intake, among other causes. Learn how to check yours – and do it regularly – so you’ll know when it’s rising to unsafe levels and can alert your doctor. High blood pressure has no known symptoms, so regular testing is the only sure way to beat this condition often called “the silent killer.”
● Do Stretches or Take Breaks when Sitting for Long Periods: If you’re on an
aeroplane for extended periods (4 hours or more), be sure to walk around the cabin or, if possible, do leg stretches before and during the flight. It’s also important to stay well-hydrated and avoid alcohol to reduce your risk of experiencing DVT.
● Consider Alternatives to Birth Control Pills: Certain birth control pills can lead to dangerous blood clots in the veins of women who take them, according to a study published in the medical journal BMJ. If blood clots are a concern, you might want to talk to your doctor about alternative forms of contraception.
Tips to prevent DVT:
Do’s
● Stay healthy and active
● Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration – DVT is more likely if you’re dehydrated
Don’ts
● Do not sit still for long periods of time – get up and move around every hour or so
● Do not cross your legs while you’re sitting, it can restrict blood flow
● Do not smoke – get support to stop smoking
● Do not drink lots of alcohol
